A great set of guitar building plans is a key element in the guitar building process. Your guitar plans serves as the road map on your journey through the guitar building operation. It is your mentor and will guide you through many difficult operations.

This is of particular importance to the luthier just starting out.

Sooner or later you will need only to nonchalantly consult a guitar plan or make your own notations and improvements to meet your own individual style. But, the plans will have served their function and they still will live on.

What Qualities Show a Guitar Plan Posses?:

Selection of the type of guitar would be your principal step in the process. The variety of guitar would be an electric guitar, a classical guitar or an acoustic guitar. But that is a rather elementary decision.

Verify the level of information and quality the plans you have under consideration exhibit.

Dimensions: Are the plans profusely dimensioned? If both US and Metric dimensions are included, that is a real benefit for you.

Notations: Another sign of high-quality plans is the use of abundant notations. If there are any gray areas or gaps in the plans, this will likely result in mistakes being made during the process.

Sections: Both lateral and longitudinal cross sections give a lot on required information as to the interior construction of the guitar. Make sure if there are sections included and if so, are they carefully dimensioned and noted for your convenience?

Layout of Braces: Do the plans indicate the brace diagrams for the top and the back bracing? If so, are there profile views that will allow you to paste the braces onto the brace stock?

Guitar Templates: Do the plans include template diagrams or are they available? Template patterns are an invaluable asset when it comes to guitar building. If they are available, make a good set of permanent templates for each guitar shape and style guitar you make.

This last point is somewhat speculative, but can you tell the plans were put together with the same passion that a guitar maker would build his guitar?
